Polybutylene pipes, AKA "Poly B" or "PB Pipe", have been at the center of controversy due to their propensity for failure, leading to significant damage and costly repairs. To make matters worse, most insurance providers have been refusing to issue a policy due to polybutylene in your home.

If your home has polybutylene pipes, the best course of action is to consider replacing these pipes to prevent potential damage and to ensure your home can be adequately insured.

Remember, it's not a matter of if you will experience a leak, but when.

If you’re located in Central or Southwest Florida and you’re in need of poly b replacement, make Repipe Experts your TOP choice!

We look forward to earning your business!

WHAT ARE ISSUES WITH POLYBUTYLENE?

Some of the many reasons to replace your polybutylene:

Polybutylene is Prone to Failure

The presence of chlorine in the water supply causes polybutylene to become brittle and can develop micro-fractures leading to leaks. Constant leaks can cause costly water damage and expensive repairs.

Polybutylene was Banned in 1995

After a Class Action Lawsuit in 1995, polybutylene was banned from use

in new home manufacturing. Therefore, polybutylene can not be repaired or exchanged due to lack of parts.

Insurance Coverage Issues

Certain insurance providers may decline to offer or renew policies for homes equipped with polybutylene plumbing systems. Others might demand increased premiums that can often exceed the cost of a whole home repipe.

POLYBUTYLENE FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Should I Repair or Replace Polybutylene?

Polybutylene pipes usually only last about 10 to 15 years and pipes and fittings are no longer manufactured. PB pipes and their fittings are prone to breaking, leaking and causing extensive water damage. So if your house has these types of pipes, it's a good idea to switch them out before they have a chance to break.

How can I tell if I have Polybutylene?

The easiest way to tell if you have PB pipes is by looking at their color. Polybutylene pipes are usually gray or white with a slight blue tint and can be identified by their distinctive markings of ASTM 03309 PB2110.

Why is PEX a good replacement for Polybutylene?

PEX has been used as a reliable plumbing material and its durability, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion make it an ideal choice for repiping projects. It withstands temperature fluctuations making it great for hot water lines. PEX’s lack of toxic substances renders it an ideal choice for use in drinking water systems with no fear of contamination from metal or other contaminants present in corroded piping.
